About Experience Point (XP) Awards:
The purpose of this page is to explain the Experience Point (XP) Awards which are given to players and their characters throughout the campaign. These awards are distributed via email as "XP Receipts" and indicate not only the quantity of the XP award but also a breakdown into various categories, which are explained below. XP Receipts are usually distributed after each major battle. This is not to suggest that experience points are only awarded for success in battle or only for combat-related things. But because battles occur on a fairly regular basis during this campaign, and almost always yield some kind of XP award, they provide a good opportunity to distribute such awards.
An XP Receipt will break down the XP award into various categories:
Previous XP: This will indicate your character's experience point total prior to the XP Receipt.
Group Award: This is an award distributed evenly to the entire party. The value is determined by the number of enemies defeated (not necessarily slain) and their XP value. This value is then divided by the number members fighting with the party, which is usually seven, but on occasion (for example, during the battle to capture Rayton) additional allies are also fighting with the party. [In the case of extremely large battles (e.g. The Battle of Dillend), alternative means are employed.] Once divided, this final value is the Group award, and is equal for all members of the group.
Individual/Class Award: This is an award distributed to each character on the basis of his or her class. Different classes gain experience points for different activities, including enemies defeated in battle, spells used to overcome foes, spells used to further a character's ethos, experience points for treasure recovered, etc. Specific values are listed in the DMG, and are generally (but not always) followed as per the instructions therein.
Miscellaneous/Roleplay: This is a catch-all award category, in which XP awards are made despite not falling into any other category, and based upon roleplaying. The roleplaying of each player is evaluated for the turns which are covered by the XP Receipt. A certain number of points are awarded for participation in each turn (so that players who fail to participate in a turn do not get credit for that turn in the form of XP). In addition, particularly outstanding roleplaying is awarded with additional experience points.
10% Due to High Ability Score: Characters can gain an additional 10% of the total of the three awards (Group, Individual/Class, and Misc/Roleplay). To gain the additional 10%, the character must have an exceptionally high ability score. Which ability score is evaluated depends on the class of the character. For more information, please refer to the chapter on ability scores in the PHB.
New XP Total: This is the new total XP value for the character following the addition of the awards listed on the XP Receipt. If this new total results in an advancement in the character's level, it will be indicated on the XP Receipt.
