Crayne

Appearance:

Crayne stands about 6 feet tall.  He's human and wears a long warm cloak; he is also dressed in a leather brown tunic and carries a sturdy backpack. He once carried a staff which was quite distinctive. On the top the wood was skillfully carved into the shape of a shooting star. Having lost this staff to fire in the Battle of Dillend however, Crayne now carries a magically enchanted Red Dragon staff.

His facial features are placid. He has a small pointed nose and furrowed eyebrows. His voice is deep and his complexion is dark.

Persona:

In terms of manner he has very strong opinions to which he will usually stick. He is stubborn. He will also sulk or grow a little angry if he doesn't get his own way. Indeed, he was spoiled by his parents before the dark incident mentioned below. Another important feature of Crayne's personality is that he likes to gather information no matter how trivial or jovial. At a later date that information maybe of an importance to Crayne when he pieces together the threads in order to make a conclusion. Also, he doesn't like to tolerate indecisiveness. He is drawn to abrupt decisions. He is always eager to gain new knowledge relating to magic and likes wealth very much. However, despite many of these flaws in Crayne’s character, what underlies it all is his belief in doing his best based on the values of peace, justice and freedom.

Crayne is insecure and carries much pain deep down. He uses this air of superiority to rise above his loneliness and pain.

Crayne's philosophy on life and magic as quoted from Turn 130.0: Captain Parst:

"Magic has always been here since the beginning of time. It is, I believe, the true source of life. We are all of this source, every human and animal that breaths in life. It is magic that is our essence and gives us presence. It is our ability to think and to imagine. It is our intelligence. We are, I believe, all of magic. Each of us has a part of the one source, some stronger than others such as me and you Elloharin when compared to say Hannibal or Storm. Because we have this strength in magic we are able to tap into the true source only in a very minor way but we are able to do it. Of course there are mages who do become so powerful and entwined with the true source that they merely break away from their physical self and again join their true source. Why then you may ask are we put here in these forms when we will eventually rejoin the source that we originated from on the event of death. Well, I personally believe it's to learn--for the source to grow in strength and to advance.

"Now in terms of how the gods relate to this, well, that is another good question! I believe that the priests are also powerful in the source. For they are often clever and can wield the source in similar ways to what we can. But it is the source that they tap into--it is just in a different manner to ours. Perhaps not as great a way for our methods are stronger there can be little doubt of that! So you see, Elloharin the Dimmed, they are some of my thoughts and you do not have to believe in them. But what I shall say is that we are all of the same essence some stronger than others. We are one!"

History:

As a youth Crayne grew up on a farm in Mistledale with his mother and father. He had a good childhood until his fifteenth birthday, when helping his father on the farm and tending to a wounded animal far from the farmhouse, he heard a scream. Alerted by this, he quickly made his way back for the house to see what the scream was about. Making his way closer a nervous Crayne quietly knelt by a bush having seen two figures emerge from his home. Looking closer he could see two hobbits. One was wearing heavy plate mail with a short sword in his hand. The other wore no armor but held a menacing grin on his face. As the two hobbits left, Craynequietly made his way up to the front door of the farmhouse and let himself in. Inside, all he could see was slaughter, the body of his mother lay across one of the comfy chairs, her face and body slashed. His father lay upon the floor with marks to his chest. After many years of research Crayne realized these marks to be caused from a Magic Missile spell.

Seeing his parents in this manner took him a good number of years to recover. He promised himself that he, himself, would not be as useless as his parents before him. Realizing that he didn't have the potential to become a natural fighter he took to the supernatural. Now an orphan, he took off and made his way to the nearby city of Halen where he met up with his uncle, Karelth. Karelth, after hearing Crayne's dilemma, agreed to take him in and even agreed to assist Crayne in his eagerness to pursue a career in the arcane arts of magic. Thus, Crayne learned from Old Halbredan, a close acquaintance of Karelth, the methodsand the studies of magic, and after a few years Crayne was able to cast a number of minor spells.

During Crayne’s time in Halen he made many friends and even found love in Melli, the daughter of a wealthy merchant. Crayne also, took great interest in his uncle's herb gardens and studied the various names and applications of the different herbs his uncle grew. Still an apprentice of magic however, Crayne sought some way in which he could gain experience and better the world. He then heard about the notice that had been placed by the Knights of Rinder and went along in the hope that he would be chosen. Melli, having not seen much of Crayne through his study and training, grew distraught when she heard of hiss imminent departure. What still remained a mystery to Crayne, though, was the cause behind his parents death.
