Canter Tarp
Canter Tarp looks about the average man of 22. He is generally kind and gentle, though when the situation calls for it, he can be quite a fighter. He stands just below six feet tall. He wears a mustache and goatee (closely trimmed), and unintimidating clothes. While on foot, he carries his sword in his right hand, slinging his bow across his back with his quiver and backpack. [Canter Tarp is an NPC in this campaign, controlled by the DM.]
History--
Born in a small town about half a day’s travel from Merriam, Rinder's capital city, Canter was the son of a leatherman and his wife. He is the second of three children; he has an older brother and a younger sister. His older brother (by three years) is named Markson, after their father, Mark. Markson Tarp inherited the family business, as was his birthright. Sara, their younger sister, was married at 18 and also lives in town.
Not having the responsibility of taking over the family business, Canter felt no obligation to spend the rest of his life in town. He learned much from his older brother and father about working leather, and spent two summers with his uncle, who instructed him in swordplay and riding.
At 19, Canter left home with his brother and father, as well as some other local men, in search of the small band of goblins who had robbed and attacked some of the local women shopping at the downtown market. The lynching mob found the goblins in the woods outside of town, but in the ensuing melee, Canter’s father was killed – a night Canter will never forget. After the funeral Markson assumed his position as head of the household. At Canter’s request, he gave him enough gold to purchase some items for adventuring, including his bow and sword. Canter left home soon thereafter, in search of his place in the world.
Skills--
Canter’s leatherworking skills are refined such that he can fashion harnesses for horses and other small leather items. Given enough time and the right tools and materials, he can also make a good piece of leather armor. His masterpiece, a set of studded leather armor, was his own armorpiece (until it was lost in his recent capture). He would almost always wear while traveling or in potentially dangerous situations.
Riding is also a skill Canter has acquired. Though he does not currently own a horse, he was trained to ride by his uncle (the same one who taught him swordplay). He can also fight while on horseback, either with his sword or his bow.
Canter also enjoys games, his favorite being card games. He used to play games when he was younger with his brother while in their father's shop. Though he hasn't played a good card game in years, he's confident that when the opportunity arises again, he can quickly recapture his past luck.
